Il grande spazio di archeologia industriale ZAC ai Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa ospita la prima mostra antologica di Mustafa Sabbagh. Promossa dall’Assessorato alla Cultura della Città di Palermo, la mostra costella una programmazione che ha presto portato all’attenzione nazionale ed internazionale lo spazio ZAC come «luogo di riferimento per il contemporaneo nel sud d’Europa e nel cuore del Mediterraneo», nelle parole dell’Assessore alla Cultura Andrea Cusumano; «un polo espositivo che sempre più va assumendo un potente connotato caratteriale, attraverso i grandi maestri dell’arte contemporanea». Una stagione di mostre inaugurata con la personale di Mauro d’Agati curata da Gerhard Steidl, seguita dalla suggestiva antologica dedicata a Regina José Galindo, per proseguire con le grandi retrospettive di Hermann Nitsch e di Letizia Battaglia. Una programmazione che precede l’avvenimento-clou che farà di Palermo capitale dell’arte contemporanea nel 2018, con la celeberrima biennale d’arte internazionale Manifesta 12.
L’invito rivolto a Mustafa Sabbagh conferma, da parte dell’Amministrazione, il forte e coerente impegno a costruire una programmazione culturale attenta ai diritti della persona ed alle grandi sfide dell’inizio di questo millennio, riportando in prima linea imperiture domande dell’umanità attraverso i grandi nomi dell’arte contemporanea internazionale. «La città di Palermo accoglie Mustafa Sabbagh a ZAC, riconoscendo in lui un comune codice genetico:», afferma il Sindaco Leoluca Orlando: «quello di un funambolo che, non dimenticando il rischio della caduta, vuole imparare a volare – e farlo attraverso il linguaggio a lui più congeniale, l’arte. Oggi più che mai abbiamo bisogno di ricollegare le nostre radici alle ali. Tenere ferma la consapevolezza della nostra storia, delle nostre tradizioni e della nostra cultura, pur coltivando l’ambizione a volare attraverso l’accoglienza ed il coraggio di scegliere la propria identità, atto supremo di libertà».
2000 mq di un ex hangar industriale dell’inizio del Novecento all’interno del quale sono esposte 100 opere fotografiche tra le più famose di Sabbagh, 10 opere video e tre nuove installazioni site-specific, oltre all’installazione fotografica acquisita dalla collezione permanente di arte contemporanea del MAXXI – Museo delle Arti del XXI secolo (Roma), presentata in anteprima assoluta, come molte delle opere inedite che l’artista ha scelto di battezzare a Palermo.
Nell’idea dell’artista, che firma anche la curatela della mostra, ZAC è concepito come un contenitore della schizofrenia contemporanea, un grande armadio che vive del suo disordine e della psicosi di chi lo possiede; metafora di un’umanità disorientata, schizofrenica nell’occultamento delle sue paure, che vengono qui catalogate da Sabbagh. Un’umanità dimentica della sua stessa umanità, dell’urgenza di integrazione – individuale e sociale – a partire da Palermo, cui Mustafa Sabbagh richiede un dovere sociale come un comandamento laico: non dimenticare.
Non dimenticare in Onore al Nero, serie fotografica che lo ha reso celebre nel mondo, riflessione personale e sfida sociale a partire dal lato oscuro individuale, che sovverte le convenzioni attraverso la multidimensionalità di uno #000, e richiama la storia dell’arte reinterpretandola.
Non dimenticare in Candido, progetto inedito, assoluzione laica concessa da chi sa condividere le colpe attraverso gli occhi incontaminati – e le mani insanguinate – di un bambino, come in Das Unheimliche, di freudiana memoria, in cui viene insanguinata l’aspettativa adulta rispetto al c.d. “diverso”.
Non dimenticare in Chat Room, lettera d’amore/sinfonia del dolore tra un povero Cristo e un povero Diavolo, e in Dark Room, riscoperta dell’innocenza attraverso un atto voyeuristico.
Non dimenticare in anthro_pop_gonia, videoinstallazione anch’essa inedita in Italia, filo d’Arianna dalla storia della mitologia greca alla storia del vizio contemporaneo.
Non dimenticare in Made in Italy© – Handle with care, schiaffo cinico a domande urlate, non sussurrate, come dovrebbero essere quelle foriere di rivoluzione. Che cos’è davvero un corpo estraneo, in una società infetta dall’ottusità? Inutile cercare di dimenticarlo, davanti alla serialità di un delitto perpetrato dall’uomo verso l’uomo, nel mare nero dell’installazione – concepita appositamente dall’artista per Palermo – 09.2015: 3944.
Così come per Palermo, e per rimarcarne l’anima profondamente intrisa di arte e contaminazione, è concepita la collaborazione con le prestigiose gallerie FPAC Francesco Pantaleone Arte Contemporanea e Rizzuto Gallery, realtà palermitane internazionalmente apprezzate per la loro riconoscibilissima ricerca – differente nella semantica artistica, comune nella qualità propositiva. All’interno di esse sono esposte – come sinapsi connettivali da scoprire nell’articolato sistema nervoso della città – due opere inedite dell’artista, pensate in relazione alle specificità dello spazio espositivo che le accoglie. Una triangolazione per non dimenticare che ‘diversità’ è un altro modo di definire la ricchezza.
«Uno schizofrenico non dimentica; uno schizofrenico accumula» scrive Sabbagh, «come in un disturbo da personalità multipla, come in uno zapping impazzito». Nell’idea di questo nuovo allestimento, le opere d’arte di Mustafa Sabbagh si ribellano alla prevedibilità di un ordine filologico, per irrompere in contraddizioni necessarie.

The huge ZAC ai Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa industrial archaeology area – located in Palermo, Sicily - hosts the first retrospective exhibition of Mustafa Sabbagh. The exhibition, promoted by the Department of Culture of the City of Palermo, carries on a programming season which soon brought to national and international attention the ZAC area as «a place of reference for contemporary art in the south of Europe and in the heart of the Mediterranean», in the words of the City Councillor for Culture Andrea Cusumano, «an exhibition centre that increasingly is strengthening its powerful character thanks to the action generated by great masters of contemporary art».
A season of exhibitions inaugurated by the solo show of Mauro D’Agati curated by Gerhard Steidl, followed by the evocative anthological exhibition dedicated to Regina José Galindo, to continue with the great retrospectives of Hermann Nitsch and Letizia Battaglia, prior to the main event which will bring Palermo to the fore as one of the contemporary art capitals in 2018, thanks to the famous international art biennial Manifesta 12.
The invitation addressed to Mustafa Sabbagh confirms, on the part of the Administration, the strong and coherent commitment to build a cultural programming mindful of human rights such as of great challenges of the current millennium’s beginning, bringing back in the frontline imperishable questions concerning the entire mankind, doing so through great names of international contemporary art. «The city of Palermo welcomes Mustafa Sabbagh at ZAC, in him recognizing a common genetic code: » says the Mayor Leoluca Orlando, «the one of a tightrope walker which wants to learn to fly not forgetting the risk of the fall, through the language most suitable to himself: the artistic one. Today more than ever we need to reconnect our roots to our wings. We need to hold the awareness of our history, of our traditions and of our culture, while nurturing the ambition to fly through the acceptance and the courage to choose our own identity - supreme act of freedom».
2000 square meters for a former industrial hangar dating back to the early twentieth century, in which there are exposed more 100 photographic artworks among Sabbagh’s most famous ones, 10 video artworks and three new site-specific installations, as well as the photographic installation which has been acquired by the roman MAXXI Museum of XXI Century Arts’ permanent contemporary art collection, here presented in preview - the same as several unedited artworks that the artist has chosen to baptize in Palermo.
In the idea of the artist, which stands out as the exhibition’s curator too, ZAC will be designed as a contemporary schizophrenia’s container, a large closet living on its disorder and its owner’s psychosis; metaphor for a disoriented humanity, schizophrenic in concealing his own fears, each one here catalogued by Sabbagh. A humankind which is forgetting its own humanity, its individual or social urgency of integration, asking for a social duty as a secular commandment starting from Palermo: You shall not forget.
You shall not forget in Onore al Nero, photographic series that made Sabbagh worldwide renowned, personal reflection and social challenge moving from each one’s individual dark side, subverting conventions through #000’s multidimensionality, and recalling history of art by means of its own reinterpretation.
You shall not forget in Candido, unedited project, secular absolution granted by those who know how to share the blame through pristine eyes - and bloody hands - of a child, as in Das Unheimliche, in Freudian memory, in which blood stains the adult expectation regarding the different.
You shall not forget in Chat Room, love letter/symphony of pain from a poor fellow-Christ to a poor devil-Judas, and in Dark Room, rediscovery of innocence through a voyeuristic act.
You shall not forget in anthro_pop_gonia, video-installation also unedited in Italy, Ariadne's thread from the history of Greek mythology to the history of contemporary vices.
You shall not forget in Made in Italy © - Handle with care, cynical slap in the face of questions whispered, not shouted - as all the revolution’s harbingers ones should be. What’s the true meaning of foreign body within an infected by obtuseness society? Useless attempting to forget it, in front of the seriality of a crime perpetrated by man to man, drowned in the black of the installation 09.2015: 3944 - specially conceived for Palermo.
As for Palermo, to highlight its soul deeply steeped in art and contamination, the artist has set up a collaboration with the prestigious Sicilian galleries FPAC Francesco Pantaleone Arte Contemporanea and Rizzuto Gallery, internationally appreciated realities thanks to their recognizable research - different in their artistic semantics, common in their high aim-related quality, where he decided to exhibit two unedited artworks, as if they were two connective synapses to discover into the reticulated nervous system of the city; works of art thought in relation to the peculiarities of the two spaces in which they are welcomed. A triangulation not to forget that 'diversity' is another way of defining ‘richness’.
«A schizophrenic does not forget; a schizophrenic accumulates», writes the artist, «as in a multiple personality disorder, as in a zapping out of control». In the concept of this new exhibition design, works of art by Mustafa Sabbagh rebel against the predictability of a philological order, to break into inescapable contradictions.
